Time to start distributing new driving licences with point system has been deferred by weeks due to delay in licence production, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority officials have said. Earlier, a private company was to start distribution of driving licences with new features from the first week of the month. Now, the company will now launch distributing the licences before December 15, they informed.

The authorities are going to use for the first time point system in driving licence to strengthen its efforts to check violations of traffic rules. The new licences will also have features including polycarbonate cover to ensure its longevity and unique bar codes. This time the traffic police will be able to check, by using the authority’s web site, if a driving licence has been suspended by BRTA or not. BRTA assistant director (engineering) Md Ibrahim Khalil told New Age on Wednesday that Tiger IT Bangladesh Limited was to issue and distribute new the driving licence in the first week of December as per a contract. The customs office was yet to give clearance to some equipment to be used in producing the driving licences which delayed the distribution, he said. The company, however, assured them that they would start the distribution by December 15 as per contract, he added. Tiger IT BD Ltd assistant general manager (marketing) Rajib Choudhury said that they already started the process to produce the licences.
